What is myofunctional therapy?

Myofunctional therapy is a specific type of therapy used to address orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs), which are atypical patterns involving the mouth and face that interfere with normal growth, development, or function. This can include: articulation problems, mouth breathing, open mouth posture, tongue thrust, picky eating habits, problems with chewing and swallowing, sleep issues, thumb sucking, tongue tie, and more. OMDs can be found in children, adolescents, and adults. OMDs can co-occur with a variety of speech and swallowing disorders. At Michiana Speech Therapy LLC, an SLP and Certified Orofacial Myologist (COM) will help you identify and treat OMDs and help you connect with other professionals, such as dentists or ENTs as needed.
