Feeding Therapy

Making mealtimes easier

Mealtimes should be a time of connection, not stress. At Michiana Speech Therapy, we support children who struggle with eating, textures, or swallowing by creating a safe and encouraging environment. Through personalized strategies, we help families build positive mealtime routines.

What is feeding therapy?

Feeding therapy helps children who struggle with eating, textures, or swallowing. It creates a positive, supportive environment where kids can safely explore foods, improve oral skills, and enjoy mealtimes.

Signs your child may benefit

  • Trouble transitioning from liquids to solid foods

  • Very limited food choices or “picky eating”

  • Strong reactions to certain textures or tastes

  • Difficulty chewing or frequent coughing during meals

  • Stressful behaviors at the table, like refusal or tantrums

Common challenges we support

  • Texture aversions and sensory sensitivities

  • Oral motor weakness affecting chewing and swallowing

  • Dysphagia (swallowing difficulties)

  • Anxiety or resistance around mealtime

  • Limited, unbalanced food repertoire

Goals of therapy / How we support

We work with families to expand food preferences, build oral coordination, and create calmer mealtime routines. Therapy focuses on safe swallowing, reduced stress, and enjoyable eating experiences for the whole family.

Why it matters

Feeding challenges affect more than nutrition — they impact growth, development, and family life. With the right support, mealtimes can become a positive part of the day again.
